Luxury furniture group Canburg, owner of Smallbone of Devizes, Mark Wilkinson furniture and Brookmans, has appointed Ian Gray as executive chairman.

Gray, who advises companies on business and strategy development, has been working with the company for several months in a non-executive chairman role.

Over the past 20 years, he has provided high-level counsel to UK companies across a range of industry sectors, including distribution, retail and food production.

He is also the chairman of Avicenna Holdings, an independent pharmacy support group, and chairman of Atlantic Products, a factual documentary film company.

Ian Gray commented: “I am delighted to be a part of such a great British business. We are leaders in the design and manufacture of luxury and bespoke cabinetry, produced in England and made by skilled artisans.

“The business currently has the largest order book in our history, at £45million, reflecting our success not only in the UK but around the world and particularly in the prestigious New York residential developer market.”

Leo Caplan has left his role as chief executive office and the company, where he had worked for the past nine years.

Founded in 2009, Canburg was listed in the Sunday Times International Track 200 in 2013, 2016 and 2017, ranking in the top 200 UK companies for export growth.

Canburg secured £8million investment in 2014 to create jobs both at its headquarters in Devizes, Wiltshire, and jobs overseas.

In 2016, it won the Emerging International Brand category at the 7th Sunday Times HSBC International Fast Track 200 Awards and the Amazon Growing Business Award in 2017.

Mark Wilkinson’s contribution to design and craftsmanship was also honoured posthumously with the presentation of the Walpole Honour at the 16^th annual Walpole British Luxury Awards.
