National Register My Appliance Day reminds people to register new and old appliances

Today, on Register My Appliance Day, consumers are being reminded to improve their home safety by registering their fridges, freezes and washing machines on a dedicated website www.registermyappliance.org.uk

Developed by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA), the website is optimised for smartphones and tablets, to allow registration of over 60 brands.

It’s not simply for new appliances; most brands accept registration of major domestic appliances up to 12 years old.

According to AMDEA, there are an estimated 93million wet and cold appliances currently in use in UK homes and keeping track of fridge, freezers and washing machines is a safety precaution.

By registering domestic appliances, householders can be contacted quickly if a recall or free safety repair is needed.

Supporting the initiative, Business Minister Andrew Griffiths MP is encouraging every UK household to register appliances and be made aware of how it can help protect their homes.

YouGov research shows less than half of owners (46%) register the fridges they have bought. It also revealed primarily, appliances aren’t registered because owners don’t think it is necessary (39%). Similarly, almost a third (29%) of households had a fridge in situ when they moved into their current property and the majority (80%) have no idea if it is registered.

Chief executive of AMDEA Doug Herbison commented: “Our industry aims to help the public to understand why registration is important and make it as easy and secure as possible. Recalls are rare and appliances are safer than ever before, but to ensure a long, safe efficient life, our members need to know where to find their product if a repair or modification is needed.”
