GfK research shows market worth £659million

The cooking market has had a positive year, with value sales increasing by 3% in the UK according to research by GfK, which also states the market is now worth over £659 million.

Freestanding cookers had the majority share of the market (61%), but they have shown 0% value growth in the last 12 months, while built-in ovens have shown 11% value growth, with sales up 15%. GfK states this is down to consumers refitting existing kitchens ad a rejuvenated housing market boosting demand.

Built-in ovens with a single cavity have experienced 15% year-on-year growth, while double ovens have experienced 5% growth. And self-cleaning features are becoming more popular with pyrolytic ovens growing by 16% and catalytic by 6%.

The freestanding sector has slowed down and according to GfK this is because the housing market and help to buy scheme have encouraged the sale of first time properties and consumers have expressed a demand for smaller cookers. Over half of the value of the freestanding market comes from 500 and 600mm cookers, with 27% and 38% of the market respectively.
