Around a third of couples aged 50-64 would be most willing to pay a premium for an ensuite in every bathroom of a retirement property, according to a recent survey.

Commercial property company Savoy Stewart found an ensuite in every room was considered the most desirable facility, alongside a secure car parking space.

The figure dropped slightly for the 65 and over age group (23%), which saw it as the second facility they would be most prepared to spend a premium on, following a secure car parking space.

And around a fifth of single consumers (21%), aged 50-64, are prepared to pay a premium for an ensuite in every bathroom of a retirement property.

It was the third most popular feature following a dedicated and secure car parking space and weekly cleaning.

Managing director of Savoy Stewart Darren Best commented: “The demand for specialist retirement properties is only set to increase in the future as the general population lives longer.

“As private landlords and developers cater to this demand, by designing and constructing new retirement units, they should wisely deliberate over the various wants and needs of the elderly.

“This research certainly shows that there are features and facilities that elderly Brits desire and would be more than happy to pay a premium for.

“While some features and facilities are prioritised over others, they all provide a fantastic blueprint for private landlords and developers as to what the older generation are ideally expecting when they envision a good retirement property.”
