All cooling appliances will have aluminium back for improved safety

Kitchen appliance manufacturer Gorenje has taken a stance against plastic-backed cooling lines and announced it will only manufacture products with aluminium flame-retardant backing, as a commitment to the industry-wide campaign for safer appliances.

Managing director at Gorenje UK Iztok Krulc commented: “Obviously this decision will have economical implications to the business, however, we want to reinforce our position as a responsible manufacturer, not just something superficial.

“All Gorenje appliances fitted with the aluminium backing will have a stronger level of flame-retardance and taking this action, we hope that other UK manufacturers will be encouraged to follow suit and do their bit for the consumers.”

He continued: “With home safety being central to our research development process, this initiative can reassure our customers that caring for them and their families is of most importance to us and we’re not valuing style over substance.”

The move follows a call by consumer association Which? for appliance manufacturers to stop making ‘fire risk’ fridges, freezers and fridge freezers by ditching non-flame retardant plastic backing on cooling appliances.

Which? has already stopped recommending the purchase of any fridge, freezer or fridge freezer with non-flame retardant backing to consumers.
