Home renovation and design platform Houzz has identified the emerging interior trends,  for this summer, based on the latest insights from its community of homeowners and professionals.

According to UK searches on Houzz from January-March 2022 versus the same time period in 2021, it highlights an increased focus on outdoor living, need for cosy and dedicated spaces, as well as enhanced practicality.

Blurring the line between home and garden, the seamless transition between indoors and outdoors in an enduring trend, as searches for Outdoor Kitchens and Outdoor Fireplace have risen by 56% and 18% respectively.

Award-winning designer Darren Morgan of Designer Kitchen by Morgan told Kitchens & Bathrooms News outdoor living provides KBB designers an opportunity to stamp their authority on the indoor/outdoor space.

While indoors, the focus has turned to the creation of place to relax with the searches for media wall nearly doubling with an 187% increase in searches and TV wall up by 63%.

There has also been a demand for more dedicated activity spaces in the home, with a growth in searches for Games Room, Playroom and Reading Nooks. These have shown an increase of 71%, 50% and 50% respectively.

Wellness also continues to be a focus of home interior design, with searches for sauna growing by 21%.

Interestingly, overall practicality has been key for homeowners on Houzz, with the search terms Larder, Boot Room, Utility Room, Laundry and American Fridge Freezer all showing growth.

The search for American fridge freezer grew by 79%, while Larder, Boot Room, Utility Room and Laundry showed growth of 37%, 36%, 27% and 20% respectively.

With dog ownership having grown during the COVID lockdowns, to over a third of households, its perhaps unsurprising searches for Dog Shower have grown by 50%.

However, interestingly, an emerging trend to watch is for sustainable energy options for the home.

As energy prices rise, it’s perhaps unsurprising homeowners are seeking out alternatives, with searches for Solar Panels spiking compared with the previous year and Heat Pump featuring on the most searched terms for the first time.
