Shop sales have rebounded in January, following a record fall in December and marking the largest monthly rise for nearly three years, according to Office of National Statistics (ONS) data.

Black Friday boosts November retail sales

Retail sales volumes are estimated to have rebounded by 3.4% in January 2024, following a fall of 3.3% in December 2023, as Black Friday and discounts led to a boost in November sales.

According to the ONS, this was the largest monthly rise since April 2021 and returns volumes to November 2023 levels.

All retail sectors, except clothing stores, increased over the month, as the ONS reported household goods stores rose by 1.8% in January 2024, mainly because of sales in hardware stores.

The amount spent online, known as online spending values, fell by 4.1% over the month to January 2024 but grew by 1.0% over the year (likely because of inflation).

The proportion of sales made online fell from 26.8% in December 2023 to 24.8% in January 2024.

More broadly, sales volumes fell by 0.2% in the three months to January when compared with the previous three months, however this was the smallest fall since August 2023.
